A high-level meeting, with the participation of the European Union and Muslim states, took place in Madrid on Friday 13/9, regarding ways to end the war in Gaza.
Spain, which is hosting the conference, is calling for a clear timetable for the international community to implement a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Spain’s foreign minister, Jose Manuel Albarez, said: “We are meeting to give one more push towards the end of the war in Gaza, to find a way out of the endless vicious cycle of violence between the Palestinians and the Israelis. The way is clear: implementing the two-state solution is the only way.”
He added: “If the parties to the war do not want peace, then the international community should take responsibility and act accordingly.”

In attendance were his counterparts from Norway and Slovenia (states that have recognized a Palestinian state), European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamed Mustafa and members of the Arab-Islamic Contact Group on Gaza, which includes the Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey.
Albares said there was a “clear will” among the participants “to move from words to actions and take steps towards a clear timetable for the effective implementation” of a two-state solution, starting with Palestine joining the United Nations.
Israel was not invited because it is not part of the contact group, Albares said, adding, however, that “we would be happy to see Israel at any table where peace and the two-state solution are discussed,” according to a Times of Israel report.
