MÁLAGA, 8 (EUROPA PRESS)
For the mayor of Málaga, Fracisco de la Torre, he is perhaps “the most famous artist of all time” and in a message on his social networks he wanted to recall how “thanks to its international notoriety the Málaga brand took off”.
A “genius from Malaga and universal creator who will always be remembered as one of the greatest painters in history”, has praised the president of the Junta de Andalucía and also from Malaga, Juanma Moreno. On his Twitter account, he has valued “his talent and his legacy” and has said that “Andalusia proudly pays tribute to him in the Year of Picasso.”
And it is that in this year, 2023, a program of international scope has been launched to celebrate the so-called ‘Picasso Year’ “being more aware than ever of the immense legacy he left”, the President of the Government explained in a tweet, Pedro Sánchez, who has highlighted that “his work will continue to inspire present and future generations”.
Under this umbrella, exhibitions, workshops, events and cultural activities pay homage to the figure of the artist from Malaga in many corners of the planet thanks to an agreement between the governments of Spain and France –the country where he died–. The Minister of Culture and Sport, Miquel Iceta, wanted to recall this agreement this Saturday, through which more than 40 exhibitions are held throughout the year in Europe and America that “are discovering the most outstanding aspects of the work and Picasso’s life, but also those most surprising and unknown”.
In Spain, the protagonists are the cities where he ended up, where he was nurtured and where he developed his talent: Malaga, A Coruña, Madrid and Barcelona. And outside the country, in France, the United States, Switzerland, Romania or Belgium, she has detailed in a video published on her social networks.
“Picasso created symbols for peace and war, he expressed joy and exuberance as well as human miseries, and he did so by breaking limits to leave us with an avant-garde, highly personal and unique legacy”, highlighted Iceta, explaining that Picasso’s cities will have an agenda of activities that extends to other artistic expressions to publicize his legacy, which he has invited to “know, spread and care”.
The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Junta de Andalucía, Arturo Bernal, has spoken precisely about the influence of Malaga on artists of other genres, who has remembered him with the song by Paul McCartney and Wings ‘Picasso’s Last Words’.
In a tweet, Bernal has said that this was a challenge from Dustin Hoffman to McCartney to write a song about anything. “The former Beatle opened the newspaper and read that Pablo Picasso had died and that’s how this topic was born. All that happened 50 years ago today. Half a century without our Andalusian genius,” he wrote.
ACTIVITIES IN MALAGA
In the city of Malaga, where he was born in 1881, “the imprint of his talent is within our reach at the Museo Casa Natal Picasso and the Museo Picasso Málaga”, recalled the mayor. Both spaces, along with many others, have joined this event.
The Casa Natal celebrates this Saturday an open day at the artist’s childhood home and at the exhibition hall in Plaza de la Merced, which will be extended to April 9. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a series of ‘chrono’ visits to the different rooms of the museum, guided by the mediation team.
For its part, the Picasso Museum, where this morning a white dove was released -symbol of peace universally known thanks to the artist’s work-, will be the setting for the first concert of the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra in Tribute to Picasso, which will be in the museum courtyard on Tuesday the 11th at 8:00 p.m.
Pablo Picasso’s love for the world of bullfighting has also reached Malaga thanks to the La Malagueta bullring. In it a Picasso Bullfight is celebrated this Saturday with the right-handers Cayetano, Juan Ortega and Pablo Aguado. During it, 29 works by 16 artists who pay tribute to the man from Malaga will be exhibited in the arena.
