He rotavirus is a virus that causes gastroenteritis, a disorder that causes severe diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and dehydration. Until now, the vaccine against this virus was not included in the vaccination schedule, except for some communities such as Castilla y León and Galicia, but now the Public Health Commission of the National Health System has approved its inclusion to all of Spain. As reported by the Ministry, the program will be incorporated little by little from this Thursday until the end of 2025.
The incorporation of this immunization was a demand of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics for a long time and gastroenteritis in infants can cause serious symptoms due to dehydration.
What vaccines are there?
There are two vaccines:
- RotaTeqwhich is administered in 3 doses, at 3, 4 and 6 months of age.
- Rotarixwhich is administered in 2 doses, at 2 and 4 months of age.
In terms of effectiveness, both are similar. Rotarix would reduce the risk of severe diarrhea in a 93% during the first year and a 90% during the secondafter administering the vaccine.
Rotateq would reduce the risk of severe rotavirus diarrhea by 97% in the first year and 96% in the second year.
Regarding the price of the vaccine, Rotarix it has a price of 93.67 euros per dosewhile RotaTeq cuesta 69.50 euros per dose.

The Public Health Commission has also agreed to increase neonatal screening with two new screenings, one for congenital heart disease and another for the detection of tyrosinemia at birth.
On the other hand, the conditions for cervical cancer screening are modified to differentiate between vaccinated and unvaccinated women in the age group of 25 to 29 years.
And the HPV detection test is brought forward to age 30 (previously 35), which will be performed periodically every five years.
