Spain announces reopening of borders with Portugal on June 22 – coronavirus

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism of Spain, Reyes Maroto, announced this Thursday, June 4, that the neighboring country will lift restrictions on land borders with Portugal and France starting next June 22.

The information was advanced by the minister at a press conference this morning, and on the Portuguese side there is still no confirmation by the Executive.

Just this week, Home Affairs Minister Eduardo Cabrita admitted that borders could be closed by the end of the month.

“We, at the moment, have the land border closed until June 15th. We will analyze this situation. I admit that, if the Spanish authorities themselves have already said that before July 1st there will be no freedom of movement, we probably have to keep the land border all this month of June “, said Eduardo Cabrita on Tuesday

The official stressed that “it does not make sense to restart the land border as long as there is an epidemiological situation in Spain that requires monitoring and as long as there is an internal quarantine”.

The re-establishment of controls at Spain’s internal borders with France and Portugal came into force on March 17, as part of the covid-19 containment measures and with the aim of protecting the health and safety of citizens.

These controls only allow access to the national territory for Spanish citizens, for residents in Spain, for cross-border workers and for those who can prove displacement by force majeure or a situation of necessity. The restriction does not apply to the transportation of goods, in order to ensure the continuity of economic activity and preserve the supply chain.
