Spain’s left-wing government has announced significant cuts to train tickets, including Interrail cards for travel in Europe, as well as buses to encourage young people to travel this summer, AFP reported.
These offers aim to “facilitate leisure travel for young people during the summer and help the tourism sector”, which is a pillar of the Spanish economy, “consolidate its recovery after the pandemic”. This was announced by the transport department in a communique after a government meeting, quoted by BTA.
More specifically, young people between the ages of 18 and 30 in Spain will be able to benefit from these reductions from June 15 to September 15 after registering on the ministry’s website.
These reductions, announced in the midst of the campaign for local and regional elections on May 28 and parliamentary elections at the end of the year, could reach 90 percent on short- and medium-distance rail lines or on state bus company services.
Young people who buy tickets for the high-speed lines of the state-owned operator Renfe (Renfe) or private competing companies will benefit from a 50 percent discount with a maximum of €30 per ticket, and the price of Interrail cards sold by Renfe” and allowing to travel throughout Europe, can also be reduced by 50 percent.
As part of the anti-inflation measures, Spain has already released free rail cards for regional and suburban trains in September. According to “Renfe”, 2.1 million subscription cards were issued in the first quarter.
Germany also launched a new transport ticket on May 1, which allows travel throughout the country for 49 euros a month.
