We all know that the Spanish black legend was invented by the enemies of Spain –the powers that disputed its international hegemony– and then “bought” by the Spanish, who have always undervalued ourselves and overvalued those outside.
We also know that the atrocities that Spain did in the beginning in America were not greater than those that those other powers did in other parts of the world – or in America itself: let’s think of England or France – but that immediately there was a differential fact in favor of our country: Spain stopped to think about what it was doing and drew up and promulgated Laws of the Indies to protect Native Americans from the abuses of the colonizers. Something that, as I say, no other power ever did. In addition – and it is a cliché, but a true cliché – the Spaniards mixed with the natives, giving rise to miscegenation, which, of course, the other powers did not do, and which, however you look at it, speaks rather Too bad for our colonizers.
Finally, there is something that is often forgotten and is no less important: for two hundred years, those who have been mistreating American Indians are not exactly the Spanish, but the American Creoles, that is, the López Obradors on duty.
