Spain and EU reject results of elections in Venezuela – Diario La Página – 2024-08-26 23:40:56

Spain on Friday called for the “complete and verifiable” publication of the minutes of Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election in order to recognize the results.

Unsurprisingly, the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela (TSJ) on Thursday ratified the reelection of Nicolás Maduro, who described the ruling as “resounding.”

“In order to recognise the results of the presidential elections in Venezuela, it is essential that the minutes with the voting results be published in a complete and verifiable manner, so that there is full transparency,” demanded official sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the government of socialist Pedro Sánchez.

“Until this happens, we will not be able to recognise the result of the elections,” they added. The Spanish government will continue “working to ensure that the democratic will of the Venezuelan people is respected” with its European and Latin American partners.

Finally, they demanded “a political solution based on dialogue and negotiation between Venezuelans, and for the arrests to cease and the social peace that the country needs to be maintained.”

On the other hand, the European Union (EU) also expressed its rejection of the announcement by the Supreme Court. “We continue to say that this election result must be proven and so far we have not seen any proof. And until we see a result that is verifiable, we will not recognise it,” explained the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, on Thursday.

Led by María Corina Machado, the Venezuelan opposition maintains that its candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, won. He accused the Supreme Court of issuing “a sentence to please the regime” of Maduro.
