Spain and Brazil Record First Death of Monkeypox Outside Africa

Merdeka.com – Merdeka.com – Spain and Brazil each reported the first death from monkeypox outside of the African continent where the outbreak of the infectious disease originated.

This deadly outbreak began to spread last May and Spain became the worst-affected country in the world with 4,298 cases. This is according to a report from the local Ministry of Health and the center for handling the outbreak.

“Out of 3,750 patients (monkeypox) with known information, 120 cases were hospitalized and one case died,” the outbreak management center said in its report two days ago, as reported by the Al Jazeera website, Saturday (30/1).

A health ministry spokesman declined to provide details about the patient who died. An autopsy is planned to be carried out.

In Brazil, the monkeypox patient who died was a 41-year-old man.

The Health Ministry said he also had lymphoma and a weakened immune system.

He was previously hospitalized in the city of Belo Horizonte and died after being admitted to the ICU.

“It is important to underline that he has comorbidities, so that people don’t panic. The mortality rate for monkeypox is very low,” said Minas Gerais State Health Minister Fabio Baccheretti. [pan]
