Spain’s public broadcaster TVE said there were more than 130 apartments in the 14-storey building, which was quickly reduced to a skeleton after the fire broke out.
“Like it was made of cork”
Speaking to regional television station A Punt, Esther Puchades, deputy head of Valencia’s union of industrial engineers, said the fire spread so quickly because the building was covered with polyurethane, a highly flammable material.
Luis Ibanez, who lives in a nearby building, told TVE he looked out the window and saw flames engulf the building, which appeared to be made of cork, within minutes. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The whole side of the building directly opposite was on fire, from the first floor to the sixth and seventh floors,” he said.
