SpaceX’s Falcon 9 Rockets Grounded: FAA Investigates Recent Landing Incident Amid Delayed Missions

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets must remain grounded until further notice due to an incident. American aviation authorities announced this on Wednesday.

The obstacle threatens to delay the Polaris Dawn mission again, the first in which private passengers can go outside the spacecraft, protected only by the suit – their space. The launch has already been postponed twice in the past few days. First because of a technical problem, then because of bad weather. There is no new start date yet.

On Wednesday morning, Falcon 9 with Starlink satellites took off from Florida. After the payload was successfully deposited, the rocket’s first stage was to land on a ship at sea as usual. That process, the main innovation of SpaceX, allows this part to be used again and again and to limit costs. But the first stage caught fire when she landed on the ship and she fell sideways. The US aviation regulator FAA is calling for an “investigation”. “It will not be possible to resume flights with the Falcon 9 rocket until the FAA has determined that a system, process or procedure related to the anomaly will not endanger public safety, “said the regulator.

It has been more than three years since the Falcon 9 first stage failed to land safely. SpaceX has successfully performed this maneuver more than 260 times since then. (Read more below the post)

Astronauts to bring home

At the end of September, Falcon 9 should take two astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). This mission, Crew-9, is part of the regular ISS crew rotation. When they returned to Earth in February, space was made for the two astronauts who had flown to the ISS in a Boeing capsule for a test mission in early June. They have to stay on the ISS much longer than expected because the capsule is not considered safe enough to return.
