SpaceX Successfully Launches Falcon 9 Rocket for 16th Time, Deploying 54 Starlink Satellites

SpaceX continues to make history in the realm of space exploration as it successfully flew a Falcon 9 rocket for the 16th time. Booster 1060 took off from Cape Canaveral’s pad 40 on Saturday, carrying 54 Starlink satellites into orbit. This achievement comes just a week after Booster 1058 became the first Falcon 9 rocket to complete 16 flights.

The first-stage booster of the Falcon 9 rocket appeared to have a successful landing on the drone ship named ‘A Short Fall of Gravitas’ in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately eight and a half minutes after launch. This marks the second launch attempt for this mission, as the previous attempt was scrubbed during the final minute of the countdown due to elevated oxygen levels in one of the nine Merlin engines on the first stage.

To ensure a successful launch, SpaceX conducted a static test fire early Saturday morning, where the Falcon 9’s nine Merlin engines ignited for about ten seconds while the rocket was held down on the launch pad. This test firing cleared the rocket for flight and allowed the mission to proceed.

Booster 1060, also known as tail number 1060, has an impressive flight history. It has previously launched GPS III-3, Turksat 5A, Transporter-2, Intelsat G-33/G-34, Transporter-6, and 10 Starlink missions. With this 16th flight, it becomes only the second booster to achieve this milestone, following closely behind Booster 1058’s launch of 22 second-generation Starlink satellites on July 9.

The mission, designated Starlink 5-15, carried the last 54 older-generation Starlink V1.5 satellites into orbit. These satellites weigh approximately 660 pounds (300 kg) each. SpaceX has been transitioning to a new generation of Starlink satellites, known as Starlink V2 Minis, which are larger and offer four times the broadband capacity of the older-design satellites.

The Starlink network plays a crucial role in providing high-speed, low-latency connectivity to customers worldwide. Each Starlink launch adds more than a terabit per second of capacity to the constellation, according to SpaceX. Prior to this launch, SpaceX had 4397 functioning Starlink satellites in space.
