SpaceX, the renowned aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company, has announced the postponement of the launch of Intuitive Machines’ private moon lander due to a fuel temperature issue. The Odysseus moon lander was originally scheduled to launch on February 14th from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida but will now take place no earlier than February 15th at 1:05 a.m. EST.
The delay was caused by a temperature issue with the spacecraft’s liquid methane fuel, which is used as propellant for its propulsion and landing systems. SpaceX detected “improper methane temperatures” during the preparations for loading the propellant into the lander shortly before launch. In order to ensure a successful mission, it was decided to postpone the launch until the issue is resolved.
The Odysseus moon lander, developed by Intuitive Machines, is an ambitious project that aims to carry six NASA instruments and a half-dozen commercial payloads to the moon. If successful, it will mark the first-ever private mission to land on the moon and the first U.S. lunar landing since 1972, which was carried out by NASA’s Apollo 17 astronauts. This mission, known as IM-1, is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, which utilizes private spacecraft to deliver experiments to the moon.
Intuitive Machines’ rival company, Astrobotic, recently faced a setback in their lunar landing attempt. Their Peregrine lander, launched on January 8th atop a United Launch Alliance Vulcan Centaur rocket, suffered a fuel leak in flight, making a landing impossible. Instead, the lander looped around the moon and burned up in Earth’s atmosphere upon its return.
With the Odysseus mission, both NASA and Intuitive Machines are hoping to achieve what Astrobotic could not. The spacecraft carries novel technology experiments, cameras, and other gear that will aid NASA in better preparing for future Artemis astronaut missions to the moon.
