SpaceX Dragon Returns to Earth with Ax-3 Astronauts
After an 18-day mission, a SpaceX Dragon crew capsule has begun its journey back to Earth with four Ax-3 astronauts on board. The crew capsule successfully undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) this morning at 9:20 a.m. EST and is scheduled to splashdown off the coast of Florida on Friday.
The crew members, Commander Michael López-Alegría, mission specialist Alper Gezeravcı, mission specialist Marcus Wandt, and pilot Walter Villadei, spent two weeks at the ISS. This mission marked the first all-European private astronaut crew, making it a significant milestone for space exploration.
The Dragon crew capsule is expected to return to Earth around 8:30 a.m. on Friday. SpaceX shared a video of the capsule separating from the ISS, showcasing the successful undocking process. The capsule will now perform various maneuvers to lower its orbit, jettison its trunk, and re-enter Earth’s atmosphere for the splashdown off the coast of Florida.
The splashdown location is set to be in the airspace near Jacksonville, Florida, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Originally, the undocking was planned for Tuesday, but it was delayed due to adverse weather conditions at the intended splashdown site.
During their time at the ISS, the Ax-3 crew conducted over 30 scientific experiments. They will also be returning to Earth with more than 550 pounds of cargo, which includes valuable research data and equipment. This successful mission highlights the significant contributions of private space companies like SpaceX in advancing scientific research and exploration.
Looking ahead, Axiom Space, a private space company, is making progress towards launching its first module to the ISS from Florida by late 2026. This development signifies the growing involvement of private companies in expanding human presence in space.
As we eagerly await the safe return of the Ax-3 astronauts, their mission serves as a reminder of the incredible achievements and advancements in space exploration. The collaboration between SpaceX, NASA, and private companies like Axiom Space paves the way for future missions and the continued expansion of human presence beyond Earth.
