SpaceX Dragon Arrives at International Space Station for Half-Year Mission

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA—A spaceship SpaceX Dragon arrived at the International Space Station on Sunday (27/8/2023) to transport a new crew of astronauts to the orbiting laboratory to begin the half-year mission.

The Endurance Crew Dragon capsule docked at the International Space Station (ISS) at 9:16 a.m. EDT (1313 GMT), where it parked in the harbor facing space on the U.S.-built Harmony module at the outpost after flight. in a wide loop around the orbital post.

Dragon and its station soared 261 miles or 420,039 meters above Australia at the time. “Thank you very much,” Crew-7 commander Jasmin Moghbeli of the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) radioed SpaceX mission control after docking (the mooring process) was successful, reported Space, Monday (28/8/2023). “I have to keep reminding myself that this is not a dream.”

Docking it marked the end of a nearly 30-hour journey for the four crew members of the capsule, which launched in the early hours of Saturday (26/8/2023) from NASA’s Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. But it is also the start of something much bigger, a six-month mission for Moghbeli and his three crew.

“This is the first step of this journey, the real mission starts now,” Crew-7 pilot Andreas Mogensen of the European Space Agency (ESA) said via SpaceX radio. “On the International Space Station, we have a lot of work that we are looking forward to.”

The Crew-7 astronauts opened up between their Dragon and ISS at 10:58 a.m. EDT (1458 GMT) to join the seven astronauts already at the station. The eleven astronauts then gathered for a brief welcome ceremony to begin their joint mission.

Crew-7 astronauts will spend six months aboard the space station and assist four astronauts on NASA’s Crew-6 mission, which is scheduled to return to Earth on September 2. Crew-7 was the first spaceflight for Moghbeli, a United States Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel who became the second Iranian-American to fly into space on the flight.

This is also the first flight for Konstantin Borisov from Russia’s Roscosmos agency. Although Mogensen and Satoshi Furukawa of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) have both flown to the ISS before, Mogensen is the first European to pilot a SpaceX Dragon capsule.

SpaceX’s Endurance Capsule is also a space veteran, having flown the Crew-3 and Crew-5 astronaut missions to the station for NASA.

NASA and SpaceX are giving a special treat for Crew-7’s arrival at the ISS on Sunday (8/27/2023).

“We’re going to be flying around the International Space Station and taking some cool photos, and showing them off to everyone to show what a great outpost we have,” Joel Montalbano, NASA’s space station program manager told reporters after launch.

This circumnavigation flight also allowed cameras on the space station to capture the spectacular view of the Dragon Endurance capsule against a blue Earth backdrop.
