SpaceX seems to stop broadcasting live streams of launches on YouTube. Videos of some recent launches and astronaut returns are gone from YouTube, as are references to the channel. SpaceX would like to offer Elon Musk’s streams on X.
Op the SpaceX website the live streams of the recent Starlink launches have been removed. They are also no longer available the company’s YouTube channel to find. In addition to the now routine flights of Starlink communications satellites, a video of the splashdown of the Crew Dragon, with four astronauts on board, can no longer be seen via YouTube. The last video is still available on X, formerly Twitter.
SpaceX has not commented on the recent policy change. The decision is not entirely unexpected, however. In the first place, X now belongs to Elon Musk, who is still the boss at SpaceX. Musk wants to market X more as a video and live streaming platform and the popular SpaceX live streams fit well with that idea. In addition, it is not the first time that SpaceX has tried to reduce its live streams. Years ago, the company suggested it would no longer broadcast certain streams, according to SpaceX, because Falcon rocket launches were becoming routine by then and it was barely worth the investment anymore. That decision was then, after much criticism from fans, eventually reversed.
It has been common practice for many years to broadcast live streams of most launches, except for certain military launches. SpaceX has also always been known for the good quality of its live streams, both in terms of image quality and presentation and visual aspects.
