When the satellite is in operation SpaceX owned by a United States businessman (AS), Elon Musk, nearly crashed into the Chinese space station, infuriating the Chinese government. The incident made Government of China track and accuse the US of irresponsible and unsafe acts in space.
As reported by AFP, Wednesday (12/29/2021), the two incidents called ‘close encounters’ were reported to have occurred in July and last October.
According to a report from China submitted to the United Nations (UN) space agency this month, the Chinese space station, Tiangong, had to maneuver to avoid a collision with a Starlink satellite belonging to China. SpaceX in those two incidents.
The report said the incidents “endangered the lives or health of the astronauts aboard the China Space Station”.
“The US has neglected its obligations under international treaties, posing a serious threat to the lives and safety of the astronauts,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian at a press conference on Tuesday (28/12) local time.
Starlink, a division of SpaceX, operates a constellation of nearly 2,000 satellites aimed at providing internet access to most areas of the Earth. SpaceX is a private US company, independent of the US military and the US space agency, NASA.
But China in its report to the United Nations held that the member states of the Outer Space Treaty — which is the basis of international space law — are also responsible for the actions of non-governmental entities on their territory.
