Invasion!

The artwork of Spacewing War definitely remembers it from back then! While the drawing has an incredible amount to tell and still seems puzzling, the actual story is told in a nutshell: Earth is being attacked by the planet Mavros, whose inhabitants are looking for a new home and therefore want to conquer Earth. This must be prevented with a Spacewing. This story is told in the game with some nice pictures.

Scroll’em Up!

The gameplay of Spacewing War runs sideways scrolling. At first glance you don’t see any difference to others Game Boy classics of the same genre. But if you play for a few minutes, you will quickly notice that the controls have been designed to be quite simple. The belief that you will have it easy in the game will be surprised. Because during the game, quick reflexes and dexterous skills are required of the player. A challenge that you don’t see often.

So that the gameplay of Spacewing War alternately there are different weapons, such as the tried and tested blaster, bombs or boomerangs, between which you have to switch during the course of the game. Various puzzles have to be solved in a matter of seconds. But there is almost not enough time left as the picture keeps scrolling. In order to still be able to get hold of a missed item, you can restart the level at any time. You can’t save for that – just like back then. The opponents are creatively designed and show what pixel art can do. Each level leads to a new final boss, for which a separate strategy must be found out. You have an energy bar and can take some hits with it. Of course, the title has some surprises in store, like things that can be unlocked or level warp zones that we’ve seen since Super Mario Bros. know.

4:3 Bild

Of the Spacewing War takes place in the 4:3 aspect ratio of the time. This may seem a bit unusual at first, but you quickly understand that it almost has to be like this, otherwise you would have far too much time to prepare for an upcoming puzzle. The 7 Worlds of Spacewing War vary from beaches, skies or starscapes. You can experience the adventure in familiar gray-green colors, i.e. in the Game Boy experience style. If that’s too monotonous for you, you can bring color to the pixel war: over 50 color palettes are able to remind you of the Super Game Boy-, Game Boy Color-, Game Boy Advance– and even to them NES-Time to remember and draw from every colored possibility. In general, a surprising amount was created with the restriction to pixels and colors. The cutscenes just ooze with charm.

Midi

The sound of Spacewing War is also like back then. The melodies seem almost random, but then fit harmoniously into an overall work of art. That was already the case back then and it is nice to see that the time was also used here back then. Even the effect noises are in no way inferior to the effects from back then.
