Spacecraft Sees Dazzling Whirlpool at Mars’ Lowest Point

SAN FRANCISCO, iNews.id – The European Space Agency (ESA) shares a view taken by the CaSSIS camera on the ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter in May. The view shows the swirls and curves depicted by the dazzling space agency.

ESA traces the history of Hellas between 3.8 and 4.1 billion years ago when an asteroid hit the planet. Visit ESA for full, detailed images and take time to get lost in dramatic circles, like the elongated fingerprints etched into the Martian soil.

The expanse of surface seen in the image is one of the lowest points on Mars. “The swirling nature of the landscape evokes a feeling of flow,” the ESA said in a statement.

NASA further says the exact reason for its origin is an enigma, however, and could be linked to one of many different processes: salt tectonism, or the viscous deformation of ice and sediment, for example.
