LIVE Techno – To help combat the effects of global warming, scientists are toying with the innovative idea of protecting our planet from the Sun with a space umbrella.
“In Hawaii, many use umbrellas to block out the Sun as they walk around during the day. I was thinking, can we do the same for the Earth and thereby mitigate impending catastrophic climate change?” said Istvan Szapudi, an astronomer at the University of Hawaii Institute of Astronomy, US.
According to the Space website, Thursday, August 3, 2023, carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases contribute to global warming because they trap sunlight around Earth which should be released back into space.
Ultimately this causes a rise in temperature. But the Sun is the first indication of creating heat in the first place. That opened up the idea of building an Earth shelter.
So, Szapudi made an ‘umbrella’. It will be located at the L1 Lagrange point between the Sun and Earth. Umbrella will join forces with solar or solar wind observation probes such as the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) that live there.
In theory, a large enough solar shield could effectively block about 1.7 percent of the Sun’s radiation at L1, enough to prevent a catastrophic rise in Earth’s temperature.
