Space History: Discovery of Asteroid Vesta by Heinrich Olbers on Today’s Date

SPACE — On March 29, 1807, the German astronomer Heinrich Olbers discovered the asteroid Vesta. Vesta is the second largest object in the asteroid belt and is only surpassed in size by the dwarf planet Ceres.

To search for asteroids, astronomers would draw a map of the sky each night and look for moving points. Sunlight reflecting off an asteroid can make it look like a dim star, but not like a star, because asteroids don’t have a fixed location in the sky.

Vesta is the fourth object discovered in the region between Mars and Jupiter, which we now know as the asteroid belt. Olbers and other astronomers think the asteroid belt may be the remains of a hypothetical planet that was blown to pieces by collisions or torn apart by Jupiter’s gravity. Source: Space.com
