“It’s really fantastic!”, says a very proud Topma. He searched for the possibilities for more than a year. Now it’s all over: in March the band Kapelle Petra will play in Meppel. This creates a special list: Dresden, Cologne, Berlin, Frankfurt and Meppel. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a pop stage in Meppel, so we had to look for a suitable place. Then we came into contact with Studio2, a new hall near the center and a very nice match formed there and everything fell into place.”
Back to the beginning for a moment. How does a Meppeler become a fan of German Indie rock? The answer lies with special birthday wishes. “I had the somewhat crazy tradition of sending birthday songs in German to birthday friends. That’s how I came across Kappelle Petra on Youtube. They have a song ‘geburtstag’. And you know how it goes with Youtube: you get caught up in it and suddenly I had listened to the whole album. Later I also started buying records and became a complete fan.”

Topma visited a concert for the first time in 2016. “They were in a community center in a hamlet just across the border. I got a few friends to rent a van together and send it that way. That was a wonderful experience. ‘That band can do something,’ he thought. I.”
Even then Topma toyed with the idea of bringing them to Meppel. Next year it will be so far. “I sometimes had contact with band members via social media. That’s how we started talking about a new tour. They were immediately enthusiastic and would like to visit Meppel for the first performance outside Germany. It would be great if we could reach the bottom in Meppel. stand of their international breakthrough.”
Socialist
Topma has experience with debating in the council chamber, but he had never organized concerts before. That is why he is doing it together with the De Muziekcoöperatie, which organizes concerts more often. The entire proceeds of the concert will also go to that foundation. “I don’t have to save a cent,” said Topma. “That has nothing to do with socialist ideas. I want to see the band live and bring more live music to Meppel. Fortunately, the hall came with a good price and other entrepreneurs also think along. This way the band can sleep at a lower price in the local hotel.”
Now comes the biggest challenge for Topma: how does he get that room full? “This is a hobby that got out of hand and ends up in Meppel getting warm for unknown music,” he laughs. Topma has confidence in it. “The band makes very nice guitar music that makes you happy. They also know how to play live with a lot of energy and I can guarantee that no one will be able to leave the hall without a smile. This is music for every music lover who loves of a party.”
