The municipal council of the SP wants the city council to do more about the increasing inequality caused by the corona crisis. That is why the fraction put written questions to the Mayor and Aldermen on Monday.
The group refers to a study by the CBS and the Amsterdam UMC, which shows that people from lower socio-economic classes are sixty percent more likely to die from the consequences of the corona virus. A generally more vulnerable health and immune system, working outside the home and in well-groomed professions and poor living conditions would be the cause. “The difference in lifespan between people in rich and poor neighborhoods has been 7 years in Groningen”, says party chairman Jimmy Dijk. That is why the municipal council must make much more money available for this in the budget for 2021. ”
In addition, the party calls for a similar study into the Groningen situation with Statistics Netherlands, the University of Groningen and the UMCG. Dijk: “We now have to use the knowledge and skills of researchers from the RUG and the UMCG to solve these social problems.”
