SP calls on parties to confess their colors: with Rutte through or not

Yesterday, ChristenUnie leader Segers announced that he no longer wanted to work with Rutte in a next cabinet. Segers said there was a new political culture must come, and that he thinks that Rutte cannot bear that culture after the events of this week.

Rutte came this week to be under heavy fire then it turned out that – contrary to earlier statements – he had spoken about CDA MP Omtzigt in the reconnaissance discussions. His statement that no one would be accountable for the phrase “Position Omtzigt, position elsewhere” was also against the sore leg of many MPs.

‘Big problems’

The House demanded clarification and there was a debate in which the entire House except the VVD supported a motion of censure. A motion of no confidence made it. CDA, ChristenUnie and D66 did not support that motion so that Rutte can continue to lead the caretaker cabinet. But the ChristenUnie announced yesterday that it no longer wanted to work with Rutte in a new cabinet.

The VVD made it clear yesterday that it would continue with Rutte and Rutte said to the NOS to want that too and to be “militant”. “Because we are facing major problems with the Netherlands. With corona and how we rebuild this country.”

Tuesday onwards

As far as Marijnissen is concerned, that is no longer with Rutte as the leader. She believes that there should now be a break with old power politics and considers it important that parties such as D66 and CDA, but also GroenLinks and PvdA now “provide clarity” about what they think.

D66 and the CDA announced earlier that they wanted to use the Easter days to reflect. They have not yet responded to Segers’s statements yesterday.

Next Tuesday, the seventeen parties will meet in the House and a debate is likely to follow. The focus will be on which new informateur will start working on a new assignment. As far as Marijnissen is concerned, it is not someone who is now in the cabinet or who wants to join a new cabinet.
