SP angry with mayor Peter Snijders, ‘this is unheard of’

The municipality of Zwolle does not comply with the law by setting income requirements for the free marriage in the city as of 1 July. The SP stated this today (Friday) when discussing the consequences of the corona crisis in Zwolle.

“What the mayor does is contrary to the civil status law,” said group chairman Brammert Geerling.

As of 1 July, the Board will restrict the option of getting married or entering into a registered partnership free of charge. The SP revealed this week that the Commission has adopted new Civil Status Regulations where this is the case. Only couples where at least one person lives in Zwolle and who have a remission of municipal taxes are still eligible after 1 July. That is not allowed by law, the mayor admitted on Friday morning. Nevertheless, the Commission continues to apply these restrictions.

“This is unheard of”
Group chairman Brammert Geerling is furious: ‘That is really unheard of. The municipality does not comply with the law and even admits this frankly. With this, the Commission sends the signal that the law applies to residents, but not to the government. This undermines fundamental confidence in government and politics. On Monday we will come up with a motion to instruct the Board to bring the regulations in line with the law and to delete income requirements. Several groups have already pledged support, but you can still expect all city council members not to accept that the municipality does not comply with the law. “
