Sowing alfalfa: the keys to guaranteeing a good forage supply

Drafting Agrovoz

Between March and April is the optimal planting window for alfalfa in the Pampas region. This is due to the fact that at this time of year there are optimal average temperatures for germination and emergence, good availability of soil moisture, less presence of aggressive weeds and root and crown development is favored.

This recommendation is part of a series included in a report prepared by Inta specialists to achieve efficient planting of alfalfa.

The technical suggestions – which the team calls the “alfatips” – include agronomic strategies, machinery regulation and other crop management techniques and were prepared by technicians Fernando Scaramuzza and Silvia Olivo, from Inta Manfredi, and Santiago Tourn, from the Unit Integrated Balcarce.

The keys to an efficient planting of alfalfa are: sowing date, optimal plant stand, planting density, choice of cultivar, initial fertilization, predecessor crop, distance between rows at sowing, sowing system and depth, and regulation of the seeder.

All these “alfatips” are available HERE.-
