At the “Lielais Kristaps” national cinema award ceremony, “Soviet jeans” received three important awards – the best multi-series film, the best screenwriter – Stanislavs Tokalovs, Teodora Markova and Valdemars Kalinovskis, and the best actor – Kārlis Arnolds Avots.

“I am happy that for the first time a Latvian series has been selected for this important festival,” says Stanislavs Tokalovs, director and author of the idea for the series.

Eight episodes are planned for the TV series “Soviet Jeans”, which tells the story of Renard, a rock and roll fan and petty criminal, who deals in western jeans and tries to cheat the system and earn money, meets Tina, the love of his life.

The plot of the series

Renard begins cooperation with the director of the psychiatric hospital, who makes a good profit from it and promises Renard freedom in return. Jeans gain popularity among Latvian youth, and Renārs becomes an anonymous underground legend. The State Security Committee (VDK) is looking for this sewing workshop all over the country. Renard comes into their sights until they finally surround him, though nothing can be proven. The conflict between Renard and the KGB agent goes beyond jeans and criminal cases – it becomes a clash of life philosophies and ideologies. Step by step, Renard becomes a real rebel, the jeans business is no longer a tool for freedom, but a form of protest.

The main roles in the series are played by Kārlis Arnolds Avots, Finnish actress Āma Milonofa and Igors Shelegovskis.
