The series “Soviet jeans”
A member of the festival jury says: “Our selection team fell in love with this wonderful series. We were blown away by its unique style, focused story, beautiful direction and acting. We are sure that the series will have a great future and we see a high market potential for it.”
“The news about the selection of the Berlin festival and the 12 nominations of Great Kristaps is a great joy for our team and, I’m sure, for the supporters as well,” director Stanislavs Tokalovs shares his impressions.
The series “Soviet jeans” has 8 episodes planned, which tells how a rock and roll fan and petty criminal Renard, who deals in western jeans and tries to cheat the system and earn money, meets his lifelong love, Tina. Unfortunately, Renard is committed to a psychiatric hospital, where he starts an underground business producing replicas of cult US denim brands. He begins cooperation with the director of the psychiatric hospital, who makes a good profit from it and promises Renard freedom in return.
Jeans gain popularity among Latvian youth, and Renārs becomes an anonymous underground legend. The KGB is looking for this sewing workshop all over the country. Renard comes into their sights until they finally surround him, though nothing can be proven. The conflict between Renard and the KGB agent goes beyond jeans and criminal cases – it becomes a clash of life philosophies and ideologies. Step by step, Renard becomes a real rioter, the jeans business is no longer a tool for freedom, but a form of protest, a higher goal.
