Southwest companies’ export business continues to recover

May 20, 2021, 11:40 p.m.

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) After a weak start to the year, the export business of the companies in Baden-Wrttemberg continued to recover. For the first quarter, the State Statistical Office reported a 3 percent increase in exports compared to the same period last year. At the end of February, companies were still lagging behind with their exports, before growth of a good 20 percent followed in March and the statistics turned positive overall.

The companies in Baden-Wrttemberg thus grew somewhat faster than the national economy (plus 2.5 percent). Imports, on the other hand, increased by 0.2 percent, significantly less than in Germany as a whole (plus 2.8 percent).

All in all, goods worth around 53 billion euros were exported from the south-west in the first quarter. The most important destination with a share of a good 12 percent was the USA, although less was exported there than in the same quarter of the previous year. On the other hand, exports to China, the second most important market with a share of a good nine percent, increased.
