English managed to win 4-0 over Andorra at Wembley in the match 2022 World Cup Qualification European zone, Monday (5/9/2021) evening WIB. The four winning goals came from Jesse Lingard’s brace in the 18th and 78th minutes, Harry Kane’s penalty in the 72nd minute and Bukayo Saka’s score in the 85th minute.
England coach, Gareth Southgate, played an unusual starter in this match. He benched a lot of his core players.
Another experiment that Southgate did was to play Trent Alexander-Arnold, who naturally plays as a right-back, into a midfielder. He played in midfield alongside Jordan Henderson and Jude Bellingham.
The results proved to be less than optimal. Alexander-Arnold is not very good at playing in his position. Overall, England also appeared less sharp in the first half to only be able to score one goal.
In the second half, Southgate made changes by fielding three of his mainstay players, namely Jack Grealish, Harry Kane and Mason Mount. He also returned Alexander-Arnold to the right-back position. England proved capable of scoring three goals in the second half.
Southgate admits that Alexander-Arnold is more comfortable playing at right-back. He revealed that doing this experiment to see all possibilities. Moreover, Andorra is an opponent that the quality of its players is still below England.
“We wanted to see something and we felt it was a good game to see that. Obviously in the second half he was in more where he felt more comfortable.” Southgate quoted from Dailymail.
“Despite often being in the same position as him in the first half but, he looks happier in that position. That’s clear, I think his game on the ball shows that happiness. in that position with Liverpool.
“But what was clear in the first half was that there wasn’t a lot of room to find him from that position. It’s a different thing because he’s only just started playing in that position, so I don’t feel we lost anything by watching him.”
