JAKARTA – West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has been selected by the Jamaican team to defend the Caribbean island nation.
This was revealed by the official of the Jamaican soccer federation JFF, who said he wanted to bring Antonio to help his country in the qualification zone for the 2022 Concacaf World Cup starting in September.
“He is a very good player and he will add to our quality,” JFF general secretary Dalton Wint said, Antara reported from Reuters on Friday morning.

Antonio has been called up to the England national team several times by Gareth Southgate and his predecessor coach, Sam Allardyce, but has never made an official appearance.
The 30-year-old forward was able to defend Jamaica through his parents’ lineage.
A similar offer came in 2016, but was rejected, but according to a recent report in The Telegraph newspaper Antonio was preparing to receive the opportunity to play for Jamaica.

Jamaica last appeared in the final round of the World Cup in 1998 and JFF claims that many players are currently interested in moving citizenship to defend the team nicknamed Reggae Boyz.
“There are some great talented players in Europe who are interested,” Wint said.
