July 03, 2023 17:13

In the southern part of Kyushu, a “linear rain belt” will occur until the morning of the 4th, and the risk of heavy rain disasters may increase sharply. In Kyushu, there are places where the risk of landslides and floods has already increased due to heavy rains. Severely watch out for landslides, swollen rivers and floods, and watch out for flooding of low-lying land.

Southern Kyushu Heavy rain continues through Tuesday 4th

On Monday, the 3rd, the seasonal rain front passes through the vicinity of Kyushu, and the “warm and moist air” that causes heavy rain is flowing toward this front, so the front is active.

In Kumamoto Prefecture, “record-breaking short-term heavy rain information” was announced, and “linear rain belts” occurred, causing heavy rain in Kyushu. As of 17:00 on Monday the 3rd, there are places in Kyushu where the risk of landslides and flooding is high due to heavy rain.

The baiu front is expected to move slowly southward in northern Kyushu, and stay active in southern Kyushu on Tuesday the 4th. Due to the flow of “warm and moist air” toward the rainy season front, atmospheric conditions will be very unstable in southern Kyushu through Tuesday the 4th.

What is the expected rainfall?

In the southern part of Kyushu, there will be heavy rain with thunder and “very heavy rain” until the morning of the 4th.

[Predicted rainfall for 24 hours until 18:00 on the 4th (heavy areas)]
Southern Kyushu 300mm
Northern Kyushu 80mm

[Predicted rainfall for 24 hours until 18:00 on the 5th (high rainfall)]
Northern Kyushu 100 to 200 mm
Southern Kyushu 100 to 150 mm

If a “linear rain band” occurs, there is a risk that the amount of rain will increase locally.

In the northern part of Kyushu, the heavy rain is expected to ease off on Tuesday, the 4th, but we cannot let our guard down. On Wednesday the 5th, the rainy season front will move northward again and bring heavy rain.

Severely watch out for landslides, swollen rivers and floods, and watch out for flooding of low-lying land.

Repeated heavy rains in Kyushu have increased the risk of disasters. Please check back frequently for the latest information.

Signs of landslide disaster

When a landslide disaster occurs due to heavy rain, there is a phenomenon that serves as a precursor. Please keep this in mind in case of emergency.

The first is that cracks can form in cliffs and ground.
The second is hearing the crackling of wood, the clashing of stones, and the smell of earth.
The third is that the water in wells, rivers, and springs becomes turbid. Even if the spring water stops, it is one of the harbingers.
The fourth is that water springs out from cliffs and slopes.

In addition, there are pebbles falling apart, rumbling of the ground and rumbling of the mountains, the water level of rivers dropping even though it continues to rain, and trees tilting. At times like this, the risk of landslide disasters is increasing. Call out to people around you immediately and evacuate to a safe place.

Watch out for gusts such as lightning strikes and tornadoes in western and eastern Japan

Furthermore, Kyushu is not the only area where rain clouds and thunderclouds are likely to develop.

A strong cold air with a temperature of minus 9 degrees Celsius or less is flowing into the sky about 6000 meters above Honshu, and the atmospheric conditions are likely to become very unstable from western Japan to eastern Japan through Tuesday on the 4th.

From western Japan to eastern Japan, you need to be careful of strong gusts such as lightning strikes and tornadoes. If there are signs of an approaching cumulonimbus cloud, please take measures to ensure safety, such as moving inside a building. Hail is also expected, so please pay attention to the management of crops and agricultural facilities.
