Southern California Edison (SCE) has warned its customers to be alert for possible calls from scammerswho stole nearly $500,000 dollars this year.

The power company reported more than 6,000 customers have received fraudulent calls which in total required more than $2.2 million.

SCE estimated it 442 of his clients gave scammers about $420,000 in 2022.

“The best way for customers to protect themselves from energy company phone scams is to educate themselves, their families and their friends how to receive calls from people who claim to be with SCE and ask for money in payment,” said Randy, Physical Security Operations Manager of SCE. White.

The amount of money that scammers ask SCE users has increased due to the new tactics used by criminal groups.

“SCE will not call you or be aggressive in ordering payment of overdue balances. Our employees never ask for immediate payments or ask you to send money via Zelle, Bitcoin or a credit or debit card to avoid cutting your power. We will never ask you to use a single or specific payment method,” White explained.

There is an increase in telephone scams during the year-end season by people alleged to be part of energy companies, according to law enforcement.

SCE has advised customers who suspect they are victims of a bill scam to confirm the status of your payment through your online account before disbursing any amount of money.

To report a victim of SCE-related payment scam, you can call 800-655-4555, or email [email protected], as well as file an attempted fraud report with the police in your area. city.
