Some of the Kent and London hospitals face twice as many Covid-19 patients as they had in the spring.
There were a total of 15,465 Covid-19 patients in hospitals in England on Wednesday, up from 13,467 the week before.
During the first wave of the virus, this number peaked at 18,974 on April 12.
The NHS in Kent confirmed late Friday that it would end some planned treatments across the region “due to the increase in Covid patients being treated.”
Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust had 221 Covid-19 patients on December 16, 120 more than they had at the first peak on April 8.
East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust was treating 357 people with coronavirus on Wednesday, nearly double the peak number they had at any time in the spring, when the numbers peaked at 187 on April 20.
An NHS spokesperson in Kent said on Friday: “We are working hard to ensure that we treat as many patients as possible, while ensuring that we provide a safe hospital environment.
Coronavirus in numbers: UK death toll at 66,541
“However, the increase in numbers has meant difficult decisions to prioritize more urgent cases.”
They promised that urgent treatments like cancer operations “will go ahead as normal.”

“These include postponing some routine procedures in the coming days so that we can reassign staff and increase the number of general and critical care beds available.”
The trust, which operates out of four major hospitals The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham, said the plan will not affect cancer patients and that individuals will be contacted directly if their elective procedures need to be postponed.
