Did you miss the news from this early morning? We’ve put together a recap to help you see things more clearly.
The conflict in Gaza between Hamas and Israel continues to tragically spread to southern Lebanon. Large-scale Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah killed 492 people on Monday, according to Lebanese authorities. These particularly deadly attacks raise fears of a flare-up in the region almost a year after the October 7 attack by Hamas. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, believes that “we are on the brink of total war.” Iraq therefore wants an “urgent meeting” of Arab countries to “stop” Israel, which Turkey accuses of wanting to “lead the entire region to chaos.” Paris, for its part, will request the convening of an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council “this week.”
This is a tragic case that will once again confront the justice system with femicides. Three Georgians are being tried this Tuesday for having tried to defraud Jérôme Gaillard, who killed his wife Magali Blandin in 2021 near Rennes. Before murdering his ex-wife himself, Jérôme Gaillard had paid them 15,000 euros, helped by his parents, to kill the mother of his four children. But the main accused committed suicide, as did his parents, burying the prospect of a trial at the assizes.
The new Minister of the Interior’s program is simple: “restore order, restore order, restore order.” During the handover with Gérald Darmanin on Monday morning, Bruno Retailleau estimated that “the French want more order, order in the streets, order at the borders.” A figure of the conservative right, holding a hard line on immigration, he also assured, during the TF1 news, that he wanted to “take all means […] to reduce immigration in France”. But in the midst of a public finance crisis, the police unions are waiting to find out what resources will actually be allocated to applaud or not the new tenant of Place Beauvau.
