South Korea’s opposition leader Lee Jae-myung has been stabbed during a working visit to the southern port city of Busan. Lee was stabbed in the neck by a man during a question session with journalists, reports Yonhap news agency. Photos show him lying on the ground and bystanders pressing handkerchiefs against his neck to stop the bleeding.
The attacker was arrested on the spot. According to local media, he approached Lee with a request for an autograph, when he suddenly lashed out with a weapon.
The politician from the Democratic Party, South Korea’s largest opposition party, has been taken to hospital. According to his party, he is conscious, but it is still unclear exactly what condition he is in.
At the time of the attack, around 10:30 a.m. local time, Lee was visiting the construction site of a new airport on Gadeok Island in Busan. President Yoon calls the attack unacceptable.
