Overseas Network, August 3rd According to South Korea’s “Hankyoreh” report on the 3rd, more than 30,000 people in South Korea have joined the prosecution application team, intending to sue the South Korean government for its inaction in dealing with Japan’s nuclear pollution water discharge into the sea, and even “work harder” than the Japanese government Promote the safety of nuclear sewage.
The Korean Bar Association, which represents the public in litigation and petitions, stated on the 2nd that as of the afternoon of the 1st, the number of applicants for the prosecution exceeded 30,000, and 300 million won (about 1.657 million yuan) of litigation funds had been raised. Most of the applicants apply online, and there are fishery practitioners, foreigners, etc., with different identities.
A representative of the application team said, “There is a saying among us fishers that ‘if the ocean dies, we will die too’. Ocean pollution not only destroys our livelihood, but also has a direct relationship with the survival of all human beings.” She Said that the South Korean government has never considered how to stop nuclear contaminated water from being discharged into the sea, but only considered what to do after the discharge into the sea. “The South Korean government should have tried its best to stop the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the sea, but now it has done nothing. We must do something about it, so we joined the application team.”
The application team is scheduled to file a complaint with the court in mid-August, claiming that the South Korean government has neglected to abide by the obligations stipulated in Article 66, Item 2 of the Constitution and Article 120, Item 2 of the Constitution. The applicant team believed that the South Korean government should have sued the Japanese government at the International Tribunal for the Sea in order to protect its territory and people, but it failed to do so. This violated people’s basic rights such as the right to life, health, and environment. The responsible attorney believes, “The South Korean government is more active than the Japanese government in promoting the safety of nuclear-contaminated water at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. This is indeed a violation of the obligation to protect the basic rights of the people.” (Overseas Wang Shanning)
