President South Korea (Carousel) Yoon Suk Yeol reshuffling the ranks of the government cabinet, especially in the ranks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and important diplomatic positions in United States of America (US). The reshuffle came after National Security Advisor Kim Sung Han’s surprise resignation at the end of March.
According to the South Korean news agency, YonhapTuesday (11/4/2023), a spokesman for the South Korean presidential office Lee Do Woon announced that Yoon had appointed South Korean Ambassador to Russia Chang Ho Jin to take up a new position as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) on Friday (7/4) Then.
Meanwhile, the current South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister, Cho Hyun Dong, according to the South Korean presidential office, Yoon has nominated to become the new South Korean Ambassador to the US.
The position of South Korean Ambassador to the US was found to be vacant after Cho Tae Yong was appointed by Yoon to serve as National Security Advisor to replace Kim Sung Han who resigned.
The series of ambassadorial and ministry reshuffles followed Kim Sung Han’s surprise resignation at the end of March, amid allegations of negligence and misunderstandings regarding Yoon’s planned state visit to the US later this month.
Various speculations arose about the reasons behind Kim Sung Han’s resignation which surprised many parties in South Korea. Moreover, the resignation was made less than a month before the important meeting held by Yoon and the US President Joe Biden in Washington DC.
The most cited reasons, according to Yonhapis that Kim Sung Han had ignored the US offer to invite a well-known K-Pop girl group Blackpink to appear at a state dinner Biden plans to host when Yoon visits Washington DC later this month.
Kim Sung Han reportedly failed to convey Washington’s proposal to Yoon in a timely manner, which could result in a potential delay in preparations for a state visit to the US scheduled for April 26.
