South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung has been released from intensive care. He lay there after being stabbed in the neck during a working visit to Busan on Tuesday. A large vein was severed, after which he had to undergo surgery.
The leader of the Democratic Party of Korea is now recovering from the operation. According to a surgeon who operated on him, a major vein was hit.
Lee, 59, requires constant observation because the jugular vein injury was difficult to repair. The politician is recovering well, but complications cannot be ruled out.
Lee was on a working visit to the southern port city of Busan. The attack took place during a conversation with the press.
The opposition leader was stabbed out of nowhere by someone walking right in front of him. Images showed Lee lying on the ground with his eyes closed and bystanders pressing a handkerchief to his neck.
The suspect is a 67-year-old man who was arrested immediately after the incident. According to South Korean police, he used an 18-centimeter knife that he had purchased online. The man wore a paper crown on his head with Lee’s name on it. He is said to have asked the opposition leader for an autograph just before the incident.
