South Korean Minister of Home Affairs Impeached by Parliament Over the Itaewon Tragedy

Seoul

MPs South Korea (South Korea) agreed to decide to impeach the Minister of Home Affairs (Minister of Home Affairs) Lee Sang Min over the handling of the tragedy during the Halloween celebration in Itaewon last year.

The parliamentary impeachment vote paved the way for Lee to set a record as the first government cabinet member to be impeached by a legislature in South Korea.

As reported Reuters, Wednesday (8/2/2023), the impeachment motion was passed by parliament in voting on Wednesday (8/2), the results of which stated 179 votes in favor and 109 votes against. South Korea’s parliament has 300 members, with the main opposition Democratic Party controlling a 169-seat majority.

It needs the support of at least 150 MPs to pass a motion impeachment That.

However, the results of the parliamentary vote did not impeach Lee from his position as Minister of Home Affairs.

A judiciary committee in South Korea’s parliament will then review the impeachment motion before submitting it to the Constitutional Court, which will decide whether to uphold the impeachment. The process could take up to the next six months.

The Democratic Party and other opposition parties have sought to oust Lee from the post of interior minister, holding him responsible for the failed response to the stampede in Itaewon during Halloween celebrations on October 29, 2022.

At least 159 people were killed and 196 others injured when crowds flooded into the narrow alleys of the Itaewon district, known for its nightlife, to celebrate the first Halloween without any coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions in three years.
