At issue the historical references to tragedies, namely in Ukraine
The South Korean channel MBC was involved in a huge controversy, after having ‘translated’ the entry of several countries in the opening ceremony of Tokyo’2020 using some references to traditions and historical moments of the country.
Now, if some found themselves recognized by cuisine (such as Italy, with pizza, or Norway, with salmon), the case changed with Ukraine. It’s just that MBC decided to put an image of Chernobyl, something that generated a huge wave of criticism on social media. In the case of Haiti, for example, the choice was a reference to earthquakes, while the Marshall Islands were labeled “once an American nuclear test camp” and Syria as “a country that has been in civil war for ten years old”. There is also the case of Romania, which was ‘translated’ using Dracula. In the face of rather negative reaction, MBC issued a statement apologizing for what it considered to have been “inappropriate images and subtitles to present some stories”.
