South Korea, US, and Japan Discuss Joint Responses to North Korea-Russia Summit

[한미일 <사진=연합뉴스>] The security chiefs of South Korea, the United States, and Japan had a phone call yesterday (14th) to discuss joint responses to the recent North Korea-Russia summit.

The President’s Office said in a press release, “National Security Office Director Cho Tae-yong, U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, and Japanese National Security Director Takeo Akiba said that despite repeated warnings from the international community, North Korea and Russia have discussed various military cooperation, including the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). “I expressed serious concerns about this,” he said.

North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a summit meeting at the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia the day before.

The security chiefs of the three countries warned, “North Korea and Russia must comply with the obligation to ban arms trade and military cooperation imposed by UN Security Council resolutions and various international sanctions, and if they violate this, they will pay a clear price.” The President’s Office reported that it did so.

In addition, the heads of the three countries emphasized that “Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council, has an even greater responsibility to comply with Security Council resolutions.”

They also mentioned, “We decided to further double cooperation between the three countries in identifying trends in arms trade and military cooperation between North Korea and Russia and preparing countermeasures, and to strengthen solidarity with the international community.”
