South Korea. Samsung heir sentenced to two and a half years in prison for corruption

A court south korean on Monday condemned the heir to samsung group, Jay Y. Lee, to two and a half years imprisonment for corruption, a decision which will have important consequences for his leadership of the global technology giant.

Jay Y. Lee, 52, was convicted of bribing an associate of former South Korean President Park Geun-hye and sentenced in 2017 to five years in prison. He denied any wrongdoing and was granted early discharge after his sentence was reduced and stayed on appeal.

The Supreme Court referred the appeal to the High Court in Seoul, which decided to sentence Lee to 30 months in detention.

Jay Y. Lee took over from his father, Lee Kun-hee, who died of a heart attack last October at the age of 78. The heir to the South Korean giant Samsung had already escaped in June his detention required by the prosecution in the investigation into the controversial merger of two subsidiaries of the group. “There were not enough reasons to justify his arrest”Magistrate Won Jung-sook said in a statement after nine hours of hearing.
