South Korea’s parliament is set to vote on an impeachment motion against President Yoon Seok-yeol this evening, following his controversial declaration of martial law last week.
The vote, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. local time on December 7, 2024, comes after President Yoon’s abrupt declaration of martial law on December 3rd, a move that sparked widespread protests and condemnation.
yoon cited the need to protect the country from North Korean communist forces as justification for the martial law declaration, which aimed to consolidate his power, suppress political opposition, and restrict media operations.
“President Yun’s declaration of martial law caused the country to fall into a state of turmoil,” a spokesperson for the Democratic Party, South Korea’s main opposition party, stated. ”People came out to protest, and members of parliament voted against it, causing President Yoon to announce his retreat and agree to officially cancel martial law on the morning of December 4th.”
adding to the controversy, Deputy Director of the South Korean National Intelligence Agency, Mr. Hong Jang-won, revealed on Tuesday night that President Yoon had also ordered the arrest of Mr. Han Dong-hun, the leader of his own governing party. The list of those targeted for arrest also included Lee jaemyong, leader of the main opposition party, and three opposition members of parliament.
Following emergency meetings held by both opposition and government parties throughout Friday, the impeachment motion was put forward. To pass, the motion requires a two-thirds majority vote in parliament.
“I have discussed wiht President Yoon last Friday,” said Mr. Han Dong-hun, head of the People’s Power Party, “but didn’t get any answer that could change his stance calling for the immediate suspension of Mr.Yoon’s presidential powers.”
Securing the necessary votes for impeachment presents a challenge. Two-thirds of parliamentarians, or 200 votes out of 300, are required. The opposition currently holds 192 votes, meaning they need an additional eight votes from the ruling party to succeed.
The outcome of the vote will have significant implications for South Korea’s political landscape and its relationship with North Korea.
