South Korea is ready to declare the end of the Korean War

In September, Kim Yo-jung, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, made it clear that her country could be open to negotiations if the US abandoned what it called “hostile policies” against them.

Moon Jae In said North Korea put forward this requirement as a precondition for discussion.

He noted that “because of this, we cannot sit down to discuss or negotiate a declaration. We hope that negotiations will start.”

The BBC writes that the South Korean leader has made engagement with the North a cornerstone of his presidency and has previously argued that an official end to the war would prompt the North to abandon nuclear weapons.

The Korean War, which lasted from 1950 to 1953, ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty. Technically, North and South Korea have been at war ever since.
