South Korea faces “dire situation” amid worst coronavirus outbreak in five months

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention of South Korea (KCDC, according to its acronym in English) has reported this Monday the registration of 197 cases of covid-19, 188 of them of local transmission, after during the weekend per week will exceed 200 daily cases for the first time in five months.

The strong rebound in cases has prompted South Korean President Moon Jae In to warn of the presence of new outbreaks in the coming days in the metropolitan area of Seoul, the country’s capital.

“The cases are increasing significantly on a daily basis, with the majority of infections concentrating around some churches,” said Moon, who indicated that the country is facing a “serious situation.”

In a message released on Facebook, the president asserted that “it is a critical moment that will determine the success or failure of the efforts and quarantines imposed in the past.”

Thus, he has criticized churches and congregations for not respecting security measures and has accused them of not cooperating with the health authorities when tracking infections. “This is an outrageous challenge to the quarantine system imposed by the state and an unforgivable act that endangers the lives of many people,” he said.

The South Korean government announced on Saturday a tightening of restrictions in the Seoul metropolitan region in the face of the increase in cases of covid-19, related to a church located in the capital and whose pastor instigated his parishioners to attend a demonstration against the Government, in which more than 10,000 people gathered.

Moon then announced that he would take “energetic and severe measures” against those who instigated to concentrate and promote agglomerations, because “they clearly put at risk the actions carried out to contain the pandemic,” as detailed by the South Korean news agency Yonhap .

So far, South Korea has registered 15,515 accumulated cases, without certifying any death related to COVID-19 during the last week, so there are 305 people who have not managed to overcome the disease since the start of the pandemic.

On the other hand, the number of patients who have managed to recover after testing positive for coronavirus has risen to 13,917, after the last 7 patients who have recovered.
