Pyongyang is accused of sending troops to Moscow for use in its war in Ukraine.
Russia’s lower house of parliament on Thursday (24/10/2024) voted unanimously for an agreement linking Moscow and Pyongyang to provide “mutual support” in the event of an attack on either side. It is expected that the upper house of the country will follow the same in the near future.
“Seoul strongly urges North Korea to withdraw its troops immediately and stop illegal cooperation,” South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) said on Friday.
“The government will work with the international community to deal firmly with military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, and will take appropriate measures as their military cooperation progresses,” said the ministry.
Seoul’s criticism came a day after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol criticized North Korea’s deployment of troops to Russia as a “provocation that threatens global security” and raised the possibility of arming Ukraine.
“If North Korea sends special forces to the war in Ukraine as part of cooperation between Russia and North Korea, we will gradually support Ukraine and review and implement necessary measures for security on Korean peninsula,” Yoon said at a press conference after talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda.
“Although we have adhered to our principle of not directly providing lethal weapons, we can also review our stance with more flexibility, depending on the level of North Korean military activity,” Yoon said.
Officials from the United States and South Korea said on Wednesday that they were aware of the presence of 3,000 North Korean troops in various locations in Russia.
