South Korea Advances to U-17 Asian Cup Semifinals for 2nd Consecutive World Cup

South Korea’s under-17 soccer team has secured a spot in the semifinals of the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-17 Asian Cup after defeating Thailand. This victory also means that South Korea will be advancing to the World Cup finals for the second consecutive time.

The quarterfinal match took place at Pathum Thani Stadium in Thailand on June 25th. Led by head coach Byun Seong-hwan, the Korean national team showcased their skills and teamwork, with goals from Kang Min-woo, Kim Myung-jun, Yoon Do-young, and Kim Hyun-min. The final score was 4-1 in favor of South Korea.

By securing a place in the semifinals, South Korea has also earned a ticket to the finals of the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will be held in Indonesia from November 10th to December 2nd. This opportunity is given to the top four teams in the U-17 Asian Cup.

This achievement marks South Korea’s second consecutive appearance in the World Cup finals, following their advancement to the quarterfinals in the 2019 U-17 World Cup. Additionally, reaching the semifinals of the U-17 Asian Cup is a repeat of their performance in the 2018 tournament.

South Korea will now compete in the semifinals against the winner of the quarterfinal match between Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan. The semifinal match will take place on June 29th at Pathum Thani Stadium at 11:00 pm Korean time. South Korea has previously won the U-17 Asian Cup twice in history, in 1986 and 2002.

Head coach Byun Seong-Hwan’s strategic tactics and the team’s scoring prowess have been key to their success. Kim Myung-jun and Yoon Do-young, who both scored in the quarterfinal match, are currently joint leaders in scoring with four goals each.
