The Game

After taking a point at Omaha Thursday, South Dakota soccer stays on the road to face defending Summit League champion Denver in a 1 p.m. (CT) match at Denver Soccer Stadium. The Pioneers topped South Dakota State 4-2 Thursday to climb into first place in the league standings with 10 points at the midway point of conference play.

The Series

Denver has been dominant since arriving to the league in 2013, but South Dakota has enjoyed some recent success. The Coyotes drew with Denver 1-1 out in Colorado during the regular season in 2021 and lost in penalty kicks at the tournament following another 1-1 score. Denver won last year’s match 4-2 in Vermillion.

The Coyotes

South Dakota (6-3-4, 2-1-1 Summit) posted its sixth clean sheet of the year Thursday against defending Summit League Tournament champion Omaha. Goalkeeper Caroline Lewis logged five saves, preventing the Mavericks from finding the back of the net. Lewis ranks second in the league in saves (58), goals against average (1.107), and shutouts (5).

Maliah Atkins and Taylor Ravelo played all 90 minutes of the match, contributing vital defense to South Dakota’s sixth shutout. Brooke Kercher-Pratt also played crucial defense on Thursday.

The Coyotes currently sit fourth in the Summit League standings with seven points.

The Pioneers

Denver (7-1-5, 3-0-1 Summit), which has won the last five regular season Summit titles, scored twice in the final 10 minutes in its win over South Dakota State Thursday. Freshman Michaela McGowan scored Denver’s lone goal in the first half. Liv Moritz found the back of the net for the Pioneers 55 seconds into the second half. McKenna Dannenhauer and Ella Frost secured the win for the Pioneers with goals down the stretch.

Up Next

The Coyotes return home for their Pink Game against the North Dakota State Bison at 1 p.m. on Oct. 15.
