South Dakota Swimming and Diving Dominates Day One at Coyote Extravaganza

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakota swimming and diving won seven events on day one of the Coyote Extravaganza held at Midco Aquatic Center on Friday.

The Coyote women posted a 4-1 dual mark on day one while the men’s team came away with a 1-2 dual mark during the six team meet for the women and four team meet for the men.

South Dakota women posted dual wins over St. Cloud State (160-63), Augustana (145-78), South Dakota State (138-85) and Sioux Falls (163.5-56.5) while falling to Northern Iowa (104-119).

The Coyote men’s team posted a 141-77 win over Augustana while suffering dual losses to South Dakota State (89-126) and St. Cloud State (83-137).

Kayla Middaugh, Camilla Brogger-Andersen, Sara Mayer and Jack Berdahl earned individual wins on the opening day of the two-day event. The Coyote women won both relays contested, the 400 medley relay and 200 free relay while the men’s team won the 400 medley relay and finished second in the 200 free relay.

Middaugh, a senior, won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 248.45 for her first career individual victory on the one-meter board.

Brogger-Andersen, a sophomore, won the 1000 free in 10:36.59 while Mayer, a junior, touched the wall first in the 100 fly in 56.75.

The foursome of Tatum O’Shea, Taylor Buhr, Mayer and Emily Kahn won the 400 medley relay in 3:51.81 while the quartet of Gabbie Ahrendt, Skyler Leverenz, Kahn and Christina Spomer closed the day with a win in the 200 free relay in 1:35.69.

Berdahl, a junior, won the 100 breast in 57.46 while the men’s team of Joaquin Contreras-Fallico, Berdahl, Jacob Carlson and Zachary Kopp touched first in the 400 medley relay in 3:59.01.

Leverenz swam to a runner-up finish in the 100 free (53.63), O’Shea was second in the 500 free (5:11.89) and Buhr placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.64).

Contreras-Fallico, a freshman, placed second in the 100 backstroke in 51.07 and Keegan Henning, a senior, was second in the 500 free in 4:44.72.

Day two of the Coyote Extravaganza begins at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, after South Dakota honors 19 seniors on Senior Day.
