The blue chair is an integral part of the Nice decor.
Who was the handyman who created it? Did you know that he once had his back to the beach and paid?
1pm TF1 looks into the secrets of this symbol of the Côte d’Azur.
The sun, the Mediterranean Sea, pebbles and palm trees… There is a fifth element missing from this famous Nice cocktail: the blue chair. It attracts tourists as soon as they leave the airport, encouraging them to spend their dollars in souvenir shops and sits beautifully on its setting, the Promenade des Anglais. “It is iconic, iconic. She is wonderful“, cheers a resident in the TF1 report above. A tourist says nothing else: “PFor me, it is a symbol of Nice, I have been coming here for many years, I love it“.
This blue chair is quite a story. From the 19th century and then through the Belle Époque, the seats were paid, white, wicker and, an important detail, placed with a back to the sea and good society was seen there, until the democratization after the war, by Charles Chair Tordo. Since 1950, this autograph has attached itself to wood and metal to prevent it from blowing away at the first breeze. And to mirror the waves, he uses azure paint. This signature dolce vita will never change again.
A setting, a memory constantly recreated by the artists of the old town. Find out our entire report in the video at the top of this article.
